Coles Fly Buys My5 save 10% until 31 October 2012

Welcome to PerthHacks.com where you can find the best tips for shopping. Coles has launched the new flybuys program which allows you to get 10% off any 5 items that you nominate online to link to your flybuys card. Here are some things to remember about this offer.
  • You can only get 10% off 5 items per transaction
  • Your transaction must be more than $50 or you will not get 10% off the My5 products
  • You need to nominate 5 items for My5 a few days before you actually buy the product
  • You must of course scan your fly buys card (make sure it is the right one)
  • This offer is only available until 31 October 2012
Here are a few tips to consider when taking advantage of this offer
  • Nominate the most expensive products you are likely to buy
  • Team up with someone else who will nominate different products and you can help shop for each other
  • Make sure you don't spend up to $50 just to save the 10% or you probably end up saving nothing
  • Make sure you still look out for specials on those products
  • Remember 10% off is not much in a supermarket normally. But it's better than nothing. If that is what you want to compare with.
  • If you are able to, get the Entertainment Book 5% off Coles gift cards on top of this offer to save even more
Here is an official list of all the products you can add to your My5 and save 10% off.

Beat the Private Health Insurance Rebate Means Test

Many people probably do not realise but this coming July, the Federal Government is introducing means testing in the private health insurance rebate scheme. This means that some higher income earners will no longer get the 30% off their insurance premiums. The rebate will instead be determined by their individual or family income total and reduce as the incomes get higher.

CHOICE has recently come out and said that people can beat at least the first year's means test by prepaying their private health insurance.  I asked my health fund provider about whether a refund would be forwarded if I changed providers and they said that the pro-rata amount remaining on the fund would be refunded which makes it look like paying upfront could be worthwhile. I am still looking into this but wanted to throw it out there, what do you think about this idea?  Will it work? should people pay in advance closer to the July deadline?

How to Opt out of Mobile Ads

If you have an Android, Windows Phone, iPhone, Blackberry or even Symbian phone, chances are you would have already installed an app that puts advertising not just in the app itself but also intrusively in your notifications as a green + button.

It is very hard to identify which app is responsible for this but you may have noticed that if you know how to look, there is an opt-out website where you can put your phone's IMEI number (get it by dialing on your phone *#06#) on their website to opt out of the advertisements. The website is http://opt.leadbolt.com.
