Free WIFI in Perth City

Starting today, there is free wireless internet available right in the heart of the city in Murray Street mall and Forrest Place. Anyone with a mobile phone or computer can access the internet for free just by connecting to the Free WIFI connection. The service currently limits users to 500MB per person per day but this can be changed in the future. Not sure how fast the internet is either but for many travelers and tourists in the city, it is better than nothing.

Perth Open Sundays 11am-5pm

As a result in the laws regulating shopping hours in Western Australia, Perth shopping centres will be open on Sundays from 11am to 5pm starting this Sunday. Not all smaller businesses will open on Sundays but the larger department stores and supermarkets are welcoming the extra day of trading.

Last year, supermarkets such as Coles and  Woolworths and department stores such as Target and BigW were given the green light to open on weekdays till 9pm.

Best Seafood Buffet in Perth

Last night we headed out to Monterey's which used to be inside the Sheraton Hotel Perth (now the Pan Pacific Hotel) and I have to say that would have been the best seafood buffet I've had in Perth. There was a time that the Atrium in the Intercontinental Burswood (now Crown Metropol) was the reigning champion for buffets but prices have gone up and quality has gone down. It is more like a massive food hall nowadays in beautiful surrounds.

Monterey's is much smaller than the Atrium which could probably seat about 200 people. The service was five star with the wait staff attending to the little things that makes for a nice night out. The seafood selection for a Thursday night was fantastic - natural oysters, crabs, prawns and smoked salmon. Other food on offer included various salads, cheese platter, lamb, grilled barramundi, chicken curry, lasagne, cajun chicken and soup.

Dessert included a mud cake, sticky date pudding, mango panacotta, pecan pie and three types of ice cream (lemon sorbet, strawberry and vanilla). Unlike the Atrium, plunger coffee and tea are complimentary but ordering any special coffee such as a latte will be at the five star price of $5.50.

The weeknight dinner is $55 with the weekends priced at $65. For Entertainment Book holders, there is a 25% off offer which takes the price down to $41.50 per person for a weeknight.

Perth Train Station Closed Next Weekend

As City workers would have noticed, the Northbridge Link project involving the sinking of the Perth train lines has progressed well and the time has come that a little inconvenience for the sake of progress must be experienced.

Next weekend from 17-19 August, the Perth train station will be closed for work on the Northbridge link. The station will be closed on the Friday from 10:30am allowing people to get to work through the station but on their way home, they will find the station closed until Monday morning.

  • The Fremantle line will will run from West Leederville to Fremantle. A free bus service to West Leederville will leave from Roe Street.
  • To get to Midland or Armadale, you will need to take the train from Claisebrook. A free bus service to Claisebrook station will go from Wellington Street Bus Station, adjacent to the Perth Train Station.
  • The Thornlie line will be closed, with buses taking commuters from Cannington to Thornlie train station.
  • Mandurah and Joondalup lines will not be affected
Following from the close of the Perth Train station, there will be disruptions on all lines and the platforms from which your trains leave from Perth station will be changed.

Forward this to your friends working in the city or thinking of attending the Fremantle Dockers v Richmond game on the Saturday 18th August 2012.

Which Airline is Worst in Late Perth Arrivals/Departures?

If time is of the essence, you may want to look at the following figures that were released today by the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics. It shows on-time performance of flights to and from Perth which is quite important for those scheduling flights around business meetings. I myself was late for a meeting because of a flight arrival which was 30 minutes late in Brisbane so for those other anxious flyers, here are the figures for on-time departures and arrivals:

  • Jetstar: 64.3% departures on time, 77.5% arrivals.
  • Qantas: 81.6% departures, 79.5% arrivals.
  • QantasLink: 82.5% departures, 79.6% arrivals.
  • Skywest: 73.1% departures, 62.2% arrivals.
  • Tiger Airways: 83.4% departures, 91.3% arrivals.
  • Virgin Australia: 85.8% departures, 78.5% arrivals.

Here are a couple of photos and before you think about leaving your impressions on the new installation, check out the camera watching the speed camera!

Forward this to a friend that you are always telling to slow down. Below is the speed camera on Roe Highway heading east which has recently been installed just after South Street and before Willeri Drive.

27/8/12 - Police have just announced that new fixed cameras being installed this week will be on Mitchell Freeway in Stirling and Kwinana Freeway Success.
