Facebook tip - Stopping people from seeing your mobile number

As discussed in the previous post, when you add your mobile number to verify your account, you wouldn't think that the new number will be broadcast to everyone.

If you have done this, and you now realise that everyone on facebook (depending on your privacy settings) has been alerted about your "new numebr", there IS something you can do about it .. and it is retrospective (meaning that your change will make it as if you never accidentally published your number.

Go to your facebook settings (top right corner) and under PRIVACY, change your privacy level for your mobile number. But wouldn't this mean that people who are already alerted will still know my number? no, actually facebook status updates happen in that when you log on, whatever updates are currently available to you will be shown on your status updates. So if someone who was alerted to your new number logged in AFTER you changed your privacy settings, they won't see your number. The broadcasting of your mobile number will be removed from everyone's storyline or status updates and it will be as if you never made the update of your mobile number. It works, you can test this by getting a friend to check your account as you make the changes.

BEWARE - Using Facebook Verification by Mobile Number

I dont think many people realise this but recently facebook has implemented word verfication for its website posting etc. An alternative way to verify your facebook account is also offered - entering your mobile number.

This seems all innocent and ok. You add your number in, receive the SMS and then enter in the verification code. But did you know that when you enter your mobile number to verify your account, facebook broadcasts your new number to all the people in your network or friends - depending on your privacy settings. The thing is, you may be very careful with your privacy, not even entering your mobile number the first time you set up your account and because you didn't add in your number, you didn't think to change the privacy setting for your mobile phone. Find out in the next post what to do about it if you have already verified your account using mobile but you want to stop people from seeing your number.

Money Most Innovative 2009 - Woolworths Everyday Money Credit Card

Money Magazine 2009 has rated one credit card as the most innovative product - the Woolworths Everyday Money Credit card. The current offer is a Free $50 shopping card if you sign up before 31 March 2009 and no annual fee for the first year.

The bonus points offers for this card include
- 3 points for every $1 spent on Woolworth branded "Select" products
- 2 joints for every $1 spent at Woolworths / Safeway Supermarkets, Big W, Caltex Woolworths, BWS, Dan Murphy's, Dick Smith and Tandy stores.
- 1 point for every $1 spend on other purchases.

The points will accumulate until you have enough points for a shopping voucher sent to you every four months which can be used at any of the above stores. The annual fee is $49 which is not too bad. My personal preference is still the BP Citibank card but this really depends on how much you visit Woolworths / Big W etc stores but this card is definitely worth considering.

Hoe to Get the Cheapest Book - Booko.com.au

Came across an interesting website the other day. It's called Booko.com.au which gives you the opportunity to search around 20 websites in one go for a book that you would like to buy. The website will then rank each online book store from cheapest to most expensive.. this includes factors such as:

1. Shipping costs
2. Spend over $X and get Y% off discounts
3. Currency conversions

One website that consistently beat all the others was Book Depository. I've bought most of my books from the Book Depository which was over 35% cheaper than the next nearest rival bookstore and comes with free shipping to anywhere in the world! If you head over to the Book Depository to get your books, don't forget to come back for more bargains in Perth.
